Orthodox Eros
Orthodox Eros examines the relation between ethics and aesthetics.
The aesthetic of the photographs is derived from the ethic which is the contemporary self-perception and cultural understandings of the male Orthodox Jew.
The power of the photos is their reliance on documenting (without models), combined with staged photography that eliminates the background in order to emphasize qualities in the subjects that are miss-seen everyday, giving an essential understanding that elaborates .
The usage of seduction (Eros) is taken from fashion photography and is also based on art history in order to create immediate empathy in the viewer, evoking his collective cultural memory. This results in a defamiliarization of the Jewish man’s image.
